User Tips – Conversations, Ambient Info, Identification

Posted on June 8, 2009

The BuzzProfile toolbar includes a few very powerful tools that are unfortunately hidden by little buttons (you can unfortunately only squeeze so much into a toolbar!)

tl-convo-track This button provides you with conversations that mention the URL you are currently looking at. This includes Twitter, FriendFeed, Digg, Reddit and any blog mentioning the URL. It loads the information into a handy little sidebar that you can casually browse.tl-ambient

The “Ambient” search functionality provides you with like-minded web pages and articles related to the site you are currently browsing. This is greatly useful for research on other professionals and companies.

identifyThis is a simple tool which can be used to explorer an individual’s combined web identity across various social network/media sites. It takes a social network profile URL (i.e. twitter.com/glennjones) and tries to find out what it can about that individual. Once it has return a combined web profile you can also drill into some of the public content that person has published on the web. It makes extensive use of Google’s Social Graph API , microformats, RSS and Atom.

How do I use them?

  1. If you are visiting an article and find it interesting… simply click a button.
  2. When dealing with a prospect or a current client, take a look at some project pages and spend thirty seconds looking at them with the extra tools. You will often gain more knowledge about the project at hand than the other person has.
  3. When visiting Linkedin, Facebook or Twitter: click the identify button and read up on other sites someone is publishing on. In most cases, professionals will be on 2 to 3 additional networks and interacting in a different way.
